Science

Welcome to Churchfields Infants' School Science page

My name is Mrs Percy and I am the Science Champion at Churchfields Infants' School.

We are passionate about Science at Churchfields Infants School. We recognise and aim to develop the natural sense of excitement and curiosity that our children have about our world.

Our children are encouraged to explore and to ask questions and the lessons are as hands-on and experiential as possible so that all children including SEND, have the same opportunities to experience, achieve and excel.  We strongly believe that as the learning is based on practical experiences the children will learn and remember their learning more through the application of their knowledge and skills and their use of scientific vocabulary. The children are encouraged to think of themselves as scientists as they carry out practical investigations and become scientific thinkers.  Where possible, we make our Science lessons practical and use the outdoors where appropriate.

We provide meaningful contexts for scientific investigations and opportunities for cross-curricular links where possible, whilst ensuring clear progression across the year groups, including time to revisit prior learning in order to embed scientific skills and knowledge.

The vision of our Science curriculum is that we are developing passionate and skilled scientists of the future, who have the confidence and desire to continue their journey of scientific discovery. Our vision statement for Science is displayed around the school and the children’s questions, observations and photographs are proudly shared.

We enhance our Science teaching by including trips, visitors and additional Science days, which further excite and motivate the children to make their own scientific discoveries and create an increased passion for Science. By the end of Key Stage One, we aim to have created young scientists who have not only received a high-quality Science education, but who are also eager to continue on their scientific journey.
