Welcome to Churchfields Infants' School Geography page

My name is Miss Foxley and I am the Geography Champion at Churchfields Infants' School.

Children at Churchfields Infants’ School are enthusiastic about and excited by their learning in geography.

Our bespoke curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced with our young children in mind, and with consideration for our school context. The Churchfields curriculum is rooted in our curriculum drivers: Growth, Environment and Possibilities. We plan connected sequences of learning to build cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning.

Our geography curriculum follows the EYFS framework and the National Curriculum subject content and is further enhanced by our infant approach to learning and teaching.

In the Early Years, children learn to describe their immediate environment and develop their understanding of place through observation, stories and discussion. They begin to explore maps to support their learning. Children’s own experiences and family connections are valued and shared in the Early Years setting, and help them build a picture of the world. Our Early Years journey takes children to different parts of the world, for example an expedition to The North Pole and a visit to a country in Africa!

In Key Stage One, geography is taught as a discrete subject. Our exciting curriculum begins with children exploring the immediate school environment before looking more closely at the local environment, the city of London, the UK and ultimately the world.

By the time our children leave Churchfields Infants’ School, they will have developed their knowledge of their locality, the United Kingdom and the world. We ensure they understand subject-specific vocabulary such as beach, cliff, city or town, relating to both human and physical geography.  Our young geographers develop and use geographical skills, including locational and directional knowledge and map skills, to enhance their locational awareness.  Learning about weather patterns in the UK and across the world runs through our entire Key Stage One curriculum in order to ensure children can build their understanding over time through experiential and observational learning. We create memorable learning experiences for our children by using field trips in our local environment, such as exploring our local area, or by creating experiences such as a visit to London.

Through our geography curriculum, our children will also learn that they are global citizens who have a responsibility for themselves, others and the world.
